Infosys Cofounder Narayana Murthy Believes Human Mind is Unbeatable, Unfazed by ChatGPT

Infosys cofounder Narayana Murthy remains unconcerned about the need for regulatory measures to oversee emerging AI technologies, despite calls from experts and industry players worldwide. In a recent interview with CNBC, Murthy expressed his belief that the human mind is unparalleled in its power, even in comparison to advanced AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Although he acknowledged the usefulness of such language processing tools for generating knowledge, Murthy maintained that the human mind remains the “most powerful imagination machine.”

Infosys cofounder Narayana Murthy emphasized that while he believes AI chatbots like ChatGPT can be useful tools for generating knowledge and improving work quality, they cannot replace human intelligence. In an interview with CNBC, Murthy stressed that the human mind is what sets individuals apart and makes them unique. He illustrated this point by comparing his own use of ChatGPT to that of the interviewer, arguing that only those who add their own intelligence and differentiation to the tool’s output will excel. Murthy expressed little concern about the impact of ChatGPT on human work in the future.

Last month, BYJU’S cofounder shared a similar view as Murthy, stating that ChatGPT could enhance productivity by automating mundane tasks. She emphasized that it was not a competition between tech and people but rather a combination of both, especially in the education sector. Murthy’s comments come amid a debate over whether AI chatbots like ChatGPT will replace human jobs. Many advocacy groups worldwide have urged a halt on technologies more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. Recently, Auto-GPT, which can perform tasks without human intervention, made its debut.

The rise of AI technologies in India has sparked a significant debate. Recently, entrepreneur and Zoho cofounder Sridhar Vembu penned an open letter to the government, urging them to develop a global consensus on the regulation and optimal use of AI. He warned that AI could jeopardize millions of jobs overnight and could potentially cause catastrophic consequences for humanity. Vembu’s open letter calling for global consensus on the regulation and effective utilization of AI has sparked a massive debate in India. While acknowledging AI’s transformational potential, Vembu warned of the “unprecedented disruption of the existing social order” if the technology is adopted without proper guardrails. In response, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in Parliament that the government is not seeking to regulate the AI space, but is aware of the ethical concerns and risks associated with the technology. The government sees AI as a significant and strategic area for the country, with a “kinetic effect” on startup growth and public service delivery. The government is even building a chatbot helpline, similar to ChatGPT, for grievance redressal in multiple Indian languages through audio messages.

The Indian government has launched several AI-driven initiatives to boost the growth of startups and businesses in the country. One of them is the Digital India BHASHINI project, which aims to create an open-source platform for startups in the AI domain. Additionally, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is working on AI-as-a-Service (AaaS) on the Meghraj cloud, while several centres for excellence aim to upskill local youth on emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain. The Digital India GENESIS, led by DPIIT, aims to support 10,000 deeptech startups over the next 5-6 years. As a result, the Indian AI software market is expected to grow from $2.76 Bn in 2020 to $7.8 Bn by 2025. The government is also working on building a common computing platform for AI research and knowledge assimilation, projected to be scalable to 1 AI exaflop. Overall, the Indian AI industry seems to be on the right track, with the emergence of new generative AI players such as Sonic Chat, Lei, and Rephrase.AI.
