Google to reduce number of promotions for senior positions this year: Report

According to reports, Google has notified its employees that there will be a reduction in promotions to higher-level positions this year due to a slowdown in hiring and layoffs.

Google reportedly stated in an email to its employees that the promotion process for this year will be primarily managed by the managers and will be similar to last year’s. However, due to the current slower pace of hiring, the number of promotions to positions L6 and above will be reduced compared to when Google was experiencing rapid growth.

Employees who are considered to be at the senior level in Google are categorised as L6. Typically, these employees have approximately ten years of experience.

At the same time as this announcement, Google is also launching a new performance evaluation system known as Google Reviews and Development. The implementation of this system may result in an increase in the number of employees receiving negative performance ratings, and a decrease in the number of employees receiving high scores.

As stated in the email sent to employees, Google is reducing the number of promotions to higher-level positions to maintain proportional growth of the number of Googlers in leadership and senior roles in line with the company’s growth. The email further mentioned that employees will only be nominated for promotion by their manager “if they are deemed ready for it”.

At a time when other Big Tech companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon have been laying off employees in response to fears of an economic recession and to reduce costs, Google’s decision to reduce the number of promotions for senior positions is not surprising.

In fact, Google announced in January that it was cutting around 12,000 roles from its workforce, and its Indian subsidiary recently laid off 453 employees across multiple departments.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, reported a fourth consecutive decrease in quarterly profit due to a slowdown in the advertising business. Despite this, the company’s workforce has increased to 190,234 employees in 2022 from 156,500 in the previous year.

In response to the challenging market conditions, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, stated during the fourth-quarter results that “the company is focused on restructuring its cost structure in a sustainable way and building financially viable and growing businesses across Alphabet”.
