DGCA confirms airlines’ inspection of 40 B737 Max for loose hardware

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has announced that they’ve conducted inspections on 40 Boeing 737 Max planes belonging to domestic carriers to investigate potential loose hardware issues. These inspections were prompted by Boeing’s recommendation for a comprehensive check before January 10, following reports from another operator regarding a missing nut and washer in the Aft Rudder Quadrant of a Boeing 737 Max aircraft. It’s important to note that this inspection was not in response to the recent incident involving Alaska Airlines.

Out of the 40 planes from Akasa Air, Air India Express, and SpiceJet combined, 39 have been thoroughly inspected with no concerning findings reported. However, during the inspection of one aircraft, it was discovered that a washer was missing in the assembly. A senior DGCA official disclosed, “Rectification action as per recommendations of Boeing has been taken before the release of this aircraft.” This implies that necessary steps were promptly taken to address the issue on the identified plane.

The official further stated, “Inspection on the remaining one aircraft will be completed before release for service.” This indicates that the inspection process for the lone remaining aircraft is ongoing to ensure its readiness and compliance before it resumes service.

Overall, the DGCA has overseen the inspection of these Boeing 737 Max planes in response to Boeing’s advisory, and apart from the identified missing washer, most of the inspected aircraft have been cleared without any significant concerns.
