Bengaluru Tenant Interviews: The New Challenge for House Hunters

Bengaluru, known for its vibrant startup culture, is now gaining attention for another unique aspect of renting a house – the tenant interview. Twitter user Neeraj Menta recently shared his experience of undergoing a tenant interview that felt more “gruelling” than pitching for seed funding for his startup. This revelation has sparked conversations about the growing trend of landlords conducting thorough interviews before approving potential tenants.

Menta took to Twitter to describe his experience, stating, “My tenant interview was longer and more gruelling than my Seed round pitch. I recently started househunting in Bangalore, and one owner wanted to interview me before saying yes.” He went on to explain that the process began with submitting background details and LinkedIn profiles through a broker. Shortlisted candidates were then scheduled for a call with the landlord.

During the interview, Menta was asked about various aspects of his life, including his background, family size, and eventually delving into his startup. The landlord inquired about his business model, burn rate, last-round investors, and more. After the exhaustive interview, Menta was informed that the landlord would evaluate other candidates before making a final decision.

Despite the intensity of the tenant interview, Menta shared that he was successful in securing the house, much to the curiosity of fellow Twitter users. The thread garnered numerous reactions, with some expressing astonishment at the extent of the interview process and others sharing their own experiences of demanding landlords in Bengaluru.

One Twitter user revealed, “The owner of the house I’m renting in Vizag wanted our bank statements and salary slips! It’s when I put my foot down and didn’t budge to share the information is when they settled.” Another user humorously referred to the situation as “Shark Tank, Landlord edition,” suggesting it could be a new TV series.
