Airtel Payments Bank Collaborates with NPCI to Introduce Facial Recognition for AePS

Airtel Payments Bank has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to introduce facial recognition technology for Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) at its 500,000 banking points. Airtel Payments Bank is one of the initial four banks to provide facial recognition for AePS.
Airtel Payments Bank’s COO, Ganesh Ananthanarayanan, expressed his delight in partnering with NPCI to provide their valuable customers with this new feature, stating that facial recognition is a vital addition to their range of secure and user-friendly banking services. He further added that this technology will facilitate financial and digital inclusion across the nation.
The National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) enables clients to perform financial and non-financial transactions at any bank point by utilizing their Aadhaar number or virtual ID to access their Aadhaar-connected bank account. To authenticate transactions, customers had to utilize their Aadhaar number and fingerprints or iris matching from UIDAI records.
This new feature will allow customers to authenticate transactions by utilizing facial recognition in conjunction with their Aadhaar number. The authentication process employs the Unique Identification Authority of India’s (UIDAI) Face Authentication RD Application. NPCI’s Chief Operating Officer, Praveena Rai, expressed her delight in Airtel Payment Bank’s implementation of this feature for AePS transactions, which will increase the availability of Aadhaar-based transactions throughout the country.
Initially, Airtel Payments Bank will offer the feature for non-financial transactions such as balance enquiry and mini-statements in the first phase. The bank will subsequently expand the functionality to customers of other banks and their own clients at other banking locations as per NPCI guidelines, according to the statement.
