AIIMS-Delhi to Create Startup Policy for Medical Students to Foster Entrepreneurship

According to reports, AIIMS-Delhi is preparing to introduce a startup policy to encourage entrepreneurship among its medical students. To facilitate interdisciplinary learning opportunities for its students, the institution is planning to collaborate with other prominent educational institutes in India, including Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management, and Indian School of Business (ISB).

AIIMS-Delhi’s director, Dr M Srinivas, is scheduled to meet with representatives of other academic institutions on February 26 to discuss the institution’s plans to promote entrepreneurship among medical students through a startup policy. The policy is a response to the changing times and needs of the industry. Additionally, AIIMS-Delhi will collaborate with top companies such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company to provide medical students with business management exposure.

On February 25th, Ketan Tewari, the regional manager of Indian School of Business (ISB), will conduct an information session at AIIMS-Delhi to discuss the scope and opportunities available in the business management sector. He will also inform medical students about the business management programs offered by ISB.

This initiative by AIIMS-Delhi aims to provide students with knowledge beyond the healthcare sector, enabling them to establish their own ventures such as nursing homes after completing their medical studies. This move is expected to enhance the students’ entrepreneurial skills and facilitate their success in the industry.

According to a faculty member, medical students should have knowledge of fields such as management and finances, in addition to their medical training, to aid their career growth.

The announcement of AIIMS-Delhi’s startup policy and collaboration with top companies and academic institutions comes at a time when India’s startup industry has produced 108 unicorns from various sectors and regions. This move by AIIMS-Delhi is expected to provide medical students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in a competitive and diverse industry.

In 2022, several Indian states including Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Arunachal Pradesh launched startup policies while Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu revamped their existing schemes. These initiatives were aimed at bolstering the startup ecosystem and promoting entrepreneurship in the country.

In addition to these policies, both the central and state governments have focused on other emerging sectors such as electric vehicles and drones, resulting in the launch of initiatives like the PLI scheme and FAME-II policy to accelerate growth. These efforts are expected to boost India’s economy and position it as a global leader in technology and innovation.
