When GM launches its new hands-free driver assistance system, Ultra Cruise, in 2023, it will be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon system, starting with Cadillac. The announcement at CES 2022 shows that Qualcomm has succeeded in gaining additional market share in the automotive sector, especially ADAS. An on-chip system called the Snapdragon Ride Platform was developed for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. It is one of Qualcomm’s cloud connectivity platforms that automakers can take over completely or a la carte. The GM’s Ultra Cruise System is said to be a more powerful iteration of the Supercruise ADAS launched in 2017. According to the automaker, UltraCruise can handle 95% of all driving scenarios and will eventually be available on paved roads in the United States and Canada. It’s a big job. To that end, GM uses three sensors: camera, radar and LIDAR, which debut in the luxury electric Cadillac Celestiek, in combination with Qualcomm’s proprietary software and processor.
To dig a little deeper into the weeds, Ultra Cruise Computing is approximately the size of a stack of two laptops, consisting of two Snapdragon SA8540PSoCs and a SA9000PAI accelerator, providing low-latency control with a 16-core CPU and AI. To do. Calculates over 300 tera operations per second for camera, radar and lidar processing.

The Snapdragon SoC is equipped with 5nm process technology. The compute unit also includes the Infineon Aurix TC397 processor to ensure system security integrity. Aurix TC397 is classified as ASIL D, which is considered to be the highest level of automotive safety integrity. All of this results in a computer system with the processing power of hundreds of personal computers, according to Ken Morris, GM Vice President of the Electric, Autonomous, and Fuel Cell Vehicle Program. 2017 Support system “To the next level with door-to-door hands-free driving”.
Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. Nakul Duggal, Senior Vice President and GM of Automotive. Automotive’s Senior Vice President and GM said the Ultra Cruise system with the Cadillac Snapdragon Ride “represents a leap in industry experience and technology.”
