Central Govt.s Sagarmala Programme to strengthen India’s coastal economy.


With new ports and modernisation of old ports in a major infrastructure service the central government’s Sagarmala Programme has been strengthening the Indian coastal ecosystem to a great degree. According to government reports, a total of 172 projects of the 802 undertaken projects are completed and 235 projects are underway. The projects are worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore. A Rs 6554 crore new port is also being constructed under the new programme.

Another aspect of the programme is the digitalization of the various systems under one efficient platform. Government reports show that the communication systems are strengthened by the privileges such as the Port Community System, digitisation of documents, uninterrupted communication, biometric systems etc.

The cargo handling of ports has increased by 42 percent with the Sagarmala programme. Efficiency efforts gained over 80 million metric tonnes per annum capacity. Port connectivity has also been enhanced. The government estimates that there will be around Rs 40,000 crore savings annually with a GDP growth of 2 percent and the infrastructure will create employment opportunities for more than 1 crore people.
