Alibaba’s AI Model Tops Global Mathematics Competitions, Challenging OpenAI’s Dominance

Alibaba Group Holding has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) reasoning model, Qwen3-Max-Thinking, which has achieved perfect scores in prestigious international math contests. The AI model scored 100% accuracy in the 2025 American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT), marking it as the first Chinese AI reasoning system to accomplish such feats. These contests are among the most challenging worldwide, testing skills in arithmetic, algebra, number theory, and probability.

Qwen3-Max-Thinking is the most advanced iteration in Alibaba’s Qwen3 family, boasting over one trillion parameters. It was developed to push the boundaries of AI reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. The new model matches the performance of OpenAI’s GPT-5 Pro, which also achieved perfect scores at these events.

High proficiency in mathematical reasoning benchmarks is critical for evaluating the strength and reliability of AI models, particularly in areas demanding complex problem-solving skills. Alibaba’s achievement signals significant progress in AI innovation, demonstrating the company’s ability to challenge leading global players like OpenAI.

The Qwen3-Max-Thinking builds upon the original Qwen3, released earlier in 2025, positioning Alibaba as a formidable competitor in AI research and application, especially in reasoning-intensive tasks.

This breakthrough follows a broader trend of Chinese tech companies rapidly advancing AI technologies, aiming to compete at the highest global levels across various domains, including language understanding, coding, and scientific computation.

In summary, Alibaba’s AI successfully topping global math competitions underscores its growing stature in the AI field. It represents a key milestone in the global AI race against established leaders such as OpenAI, highlighting China’s accelerating innovation capabilities in advanced artificial intelligence.
